Instruction writing - How to Make a Bug Hotel

We will explore the instruction text ‘How to make a bug hotel’ and gain a really good understanding of it. We will then write our own instruction text as a class, before independently writing an instruction text on how to make a bird feeder. Throughout this writing process we will learn how to use the different features of this text type.

Reading

Maths - Consolidation and transition

We will revisit and consolidate the key skills taught in Year 2, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will then explore the arithmetic expectations of Year 3, discussing and practising how the skills we have learnt in Year 2 can be applied to this.

Science – Growing up

We will learn about mothers and their offspring, before learning the lifecycle of humans, mammals, amphibians and butterflies. We will use this knowledge to identify patterns between the life cycles of different animals.

Design and Technology – Mechanisms: Making a moving monster

After learning the terms; pivot, lever and linkage, we will design a monster which will move using a linkage mechanism. We will practise making linkages of different types and varying the materials they use to bring their monsters to life.

Religion and World Views – Where do some people talk to God?

We will learn where people prayer and explore the similarities and differences between these places. These places of worship will include temples, churches, mosques, synagogues and gurudwaras.

Music - Myths and legends

We will learn about graphic scores and how they can show a picture of the layers or texture of a piece of music. We will also explore 'Tintagel', which is an example of a symphonic poem, written by Arthur Bax in 1917.

Geography - What is it like to live by the coast?

We will start our learning by naming and locating the seas and oceans surrounding the UK. We will then learn what the coast is, in addition to identifying the physical features of the Jurassic Coast. We will then answer the question 'How do people use Weymouth?', before investigating how people use our local coast and presenting our findings. 

We will also use field work to develop our map skills and compass skills, including using North, East, South and West in the context of our school.

History – What is a monarch?

We will learn what a monarch is, who our monarch is and why coronations take place. We will then learn how William the Conqueror became King of England and how he ruled, including the building of castles. We will also learn how castles changes, as well as exploring what a monarch was in the past.

Computing Programming 2 - Scratch Junior

We will use Scratch Junior to learn a range of skills, including: creating an animation, using characters as buttons to make musical instruments on Scratch, following an algorithm to program a joke and planning and using algorithms to create three little pigs algorithms.

PSHE - Economic wellbeing

We will be learning about where money comes from, how to look after money and why we use banks and building societies. We will also discuss the difference between wants and needs.

PE - Kwik Cricket & Athletics

We will learn how to play Kwik Cricket and the skills involved such as throwing, runs between wickets, catching the ball and hitting the ball.

We will continue to focus on throwing with accuracy and power when throwing a vortex or shotput. We will also learn how to apply the running techniques we have learnt in Year 2 to compete in relay races and participate in team games.
