This term, we will use the Opening Worlds curriculum to explore the topics of Persia and Greece, and Agriculture.
History – Persia and Greece:
We will be learning about King of the Kings, the Persian Empire, Greek city states, Greek Gods and Goddesses, Greek language and Persian wars.

Geography – Agriculture:
We will be learning about agriculture, looking at arable and pastoral farming, changing landscapes, food which affects farming and sheep farming in Wales.

Maths:
Our maths focus for this term will be measuring length and perimeter. We will talk about units of measurement including millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm) and metres (m) and how we can use these to record measuring large areas. Our work will focus on comparing lengths and measurements, as well as adding and subtracting lengths.
Following on from this, we will focus on fractions. This will involve recapping quarters, halves and thirds which will allow us to begin to explore equivalent fractions and unit/non-unit fractions.
We will end the term learning about mass and capacity. Children will use scales to measure in kilograms and grams. They will compare mass and add and subtract mass. Children will measure capacity and volume in litres and millimetres. They will compare, add and subtract capacities and volumes.
We will also continue to build our arithmetic skills through Number and Lightning.

English:
This term we will be reading Krindlekrax written by Philip Ridley. He is an unlikely hero who lives on Lizard Street, and it is here that the mysterious creature ‘Krindlekrax’ lurks underground! We will use our reading for inference techniques to infer character’s feelings and actions We will explore how author’s use word classes to really capture a reader’s attention, and see if we can use these techniques in our own writing.

Science – Plants:
We will be writing a piece of information text linked to our learning.
Children will be naming different parts of a plant and their functions. They will investigate the conditions affecting plant growth and finding out how water is transported in plants. They will learn about the stages of plant life cycles, in particular seed formation, dispersal and germination.

French: In a French Classroom:
Children will learn how to respond and give simple instructions in French. The will learn and use vocabulary for items commonly found in a school bag which will lead to them writing short descriptions in French and presenting to others what is in their bag.

PE:
Dance (indoor)
This term we will be learning Charleston. Its roots go back to the 1920’s. It was a hugely popular past time when it was introduced and is believed to have been influenced by an African dance. It is still one of the most popular dance genres. Children will be following rhythms and moving to its beat. Making their own improvisation creating their own short motif based on the movement patterns taught through set routines.

Tennis (outdoor) -
This term the children we be learning how to play tennis, they will learn how to hold a tennis racket correctly and then learn to hit the ball and rally the ball to one another. The will gain an understanding of posture in tennis and where to stand and move on a tennis court, reacting to the balls direction and positioning themselves ready for the shot.

RE: People of God:
Children will be learning about what it is like to follow God. The People of God try to live in the way God wants, following his commands and worshipping him. People believe God promises to stay with them and Bible stories show how God keeps his promises. They will be making simple links between promises in the story or Noah and promises that Christians make at a wedding ceremony.

PSHE – Citizenship:
Children will learn that they have rights and how these benefit them. They will learn adult’s responsibilities for supporting children’s rights. They will be discussing the benefits of recycling. They will be learning about the different groups within a community and how local buildings are used including how charities support the local community. They will understand what local democracy means and how it affects us. They will also learn about rules and the consequences of breaking them.

Design and Technology – Textiles:
Children will be designing and making a purse or wallet. They will be using their Maths skills to measure and compare lengths of fabrics. The children will be using a selection of fabrics and fastenings to make their project.

Music – Ballads:
Children will learn what ballads are and how to convey different emotions when performing to them. Children will carefully select vocabulary to describe the story the music is portraying before turning them into lyrics. They will incorporate rhyming words and follow the structure of a traditional ballad.

Computing:
This term the children will learn about the journey inside a computer. To do this they will learn about the different components of a computer through building their own paper versions, and exploring how these work. Children will also learn how to dismantle a tablet.

Art:
Children will be developing an understanding of shading and drawing techniques to create botanical inspired drawings. They will recognise how to use shapes in drawings. Learning how shade creates light and dark tones in drawings. Children will be inspired by the artwork of Max Ernst and botanical artist Maud Purdy and creating textured rubbings and botanical drawings from observation. Finally, they will apply an understanding of composition to create abstract drawings.
