Text for enjoyment – Gregory Cool - Caroline Binch
The children will be working this half-term towards writing a piece of persuasive text. Children will be encouraged to use drama and role-play techniques to learn how to write in a persuasive manner.
We have had a huge focus on presentation and handwriting in Summer 1, and we are so pleased to see so many children enjoying and using cursive writing – they are so proud of how their writing looks now. Our focus this term will be spelling the Year 3/4 high frequency word list. If you would like another copy of this for working on at home, please do let a member of the Year 3 team know.
Bedrock will continue to be used to improve pupils’ vocabulary knowledge. Pupils will be given opportunities in class, at least twice per week, to complete sessions but the expectation for pupils to complete at least 2 lessons a week at home still remains.
Through our Reading for Inference sessions, children are learning to use their background knowledge and visualisation skills to bring a text to life. They are now much more confident at using inference to find answers to questions within a text. The children now have the skills to re-read the full sentence to check what an unfamiliar word may mean, and also using synonyms (alternative words that may fit the context) to help them to work out the word’s meaning.

Maths
Geometry and measurement.
Pupils will start off the term continuing with their work on time which was the focus just before half-term. This is an area of Maths that needs to be recapped every day both at home and in school. We will then move on to geometry learning about properties of shapes, angles and position. Finally, before the end of the half-term we will start to look at measurement focusing on mass and capacity.
Children will continue to complete a Number and Lightning which is taught in addition to their daily Math’s lesson. Pupils who are already competent in various areas will further embed their understanding through a series of deepening and enriching tasks.
Times tables is still a focus in class, with daily teaching and practice. Pupils should also work on their times' table at home. We are aiming to know the multiplication and division facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 times tables by the end of term!

Science
Science this term will all be focused on Light. Children will learn that dark is the absence of light and that they need light in order to see things. They will learn how light is reflected from surfaces, shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by a solid object and light from the sun can be dangerous and therefore we need to protect our eyes.

Computing
Comparison cards and databases
This term children will be learning what is meant by ‘field,’ ‘record,’ and ‘data.’ They will compare paper and computerised databases. They will put values into a spreadsheet and sort, filter and interpret the data. They will create a graph on google sheets explaining the purpose of visual representations of data.

RE
What are deeper meanings of festivals?
In RE children will identify the main beliefs at the heart of religious festivals (i.e. at least one festival in at least two religions). They will make clear links between these beliefs and the stories recalled at the festivals. They will then make connections between stories, teachings, symbols and beliefs and how believers celebrate these festivals. They will raise questions and suggest answers about what is worth celebrating and remembering in religious communities and in their own lives. They will make links between the beliefs and practices studied and the role of festivals in the life of Britain today, showing their understanding of the values and beliefs at the heart of each festival studied, giving good reasons for their ideas.

Modern Foreign Languages (French)
In French we will be learning about the circle of life. Children will write sentences, sourcing new vocabulary from the dictionary and apply the appropriate indefinite article (un/une) and also identify different word classes within a sentence. They will recognise key vocabulary and structure clues, and use scientific understanding solving a puzzle. They will attempt to decode new sentences using their context and sentence structure.

Design and Technology
This term, our DT project will be Healthy food. We will learn the skills of spreading, cutting and grating whilst designing, making and evaluating bread based product. We are aiming to design bread based items with a filling for lunch, such as a wrap, a sandwich or a roll

Ukulele
This term we are pleased to say that we will continue to learn how to play the Ukulele. We have absolutely loved this so far, and we can already play 4 chords and 6 new songs!

History
In History, we will be learning about Alexander the Great. We will expand on our previous learning about the Persian Empire. We will learn about The Northern Greek kingdom of Macedon and how they felt threatened by Persian power. We will learn about King Philip and how he made Macedon great. We will learn about Alexander’s battles and how he marched from one city to another city in the Persian Empire discovering how he conquered Persia. Finally, we will be learning about the wonderful library of Alexandria.

Geography
In Geography, we will be looking at Climate and Biomes. We will explore climates in Europe, and how these compare to other countries and continents, as well as learning all of the continent and ocean names. We will learn about the equator, and how climate differ to the North and the South of this, as well as beginning to understand what a Biome is – places on Earth that have similar animals, climates and plants.

PSHE and RSE
Our final topics in PSHE is economic wellbeing where we be looking at different ways of paying for things; explaining that money is needed when paying for items using a cheque, bank transfer or card. Children will have the opportunity to budget money through different scenarios, learning that a range of things might influence our spending choices. Children will recognise that there is a wide range of jobs available and that personal skills and interests affect career choices and understand that stereotypes sometimes exist about the jobs people do.
In our transition lesson children will reflect on their time in Year 3 and how far they have come as both a class and an individual. We will look at setting targets for the following year and how we can all support each other as we move into Year 4.

PE
Pupils will take part in two PE lessons each week. One lesson will be focused on football and the other will be cricket.
Football
Children will learn skills such as passing and receiving the football to one another whilst on the move. They will learn to perform skills under pressure using the space around them to attack, change direction and increase their accuracy. Children will learn to tackle each other correctly and learn how to do this safely in a game situation.

Cricket
Children will build on their skills learned in year 2. They will develop their skills of striking a ball off a tee, move to catch ball and deliver an underarm throw. They will throw the ball back to a given person to stop someone scoring. They will develop their accuracy when throwing the ball towards a stationary object. And run forwards and backwards and side to side once the ball has been struck. They will follow key rules for the game e.g. carry the bat, pass the ball back to the bowler.
